Challenge
Charity Appeal . . . .
Or at least they hope they are . . . as they prepare to take part in the Polar Challenge in April 2007, a race to get to the Magnetic North Pole in what has been dubbed The Worlds Toughest Race.
Doug Brown of Slough is one of 3 members of Team Deep Freeze (others are Adam Komrower, Hampshire and Keith Matthews, Hertfordshire) who are looking to undertake this challenge in order to raise over £30,000 for their chosen charity. They have selected the Multiple Sclerosis Society because they all know somebody who is affected by the condition. There are over 85,000 people suffering from MS in the UK, with seven more diagnosed every day and the MS Society plays a crucial role for sufferers. Help supplied by the charity includes the provision of MS Nurses for patient and family support, as well as funding for medical research in the quest to find a cure.
The Challenge itself is a race over 350 miles of sea ice from Resolute (Northern Canada) to the 1996 Magnetic North Pole through ‘Polar Bear Pass’, where around 80% of the worlds population of these tremendous animals travel through at about the same time of year as the team. The race itself is expected to last up to 3 weeks and will see the team pulling 120lb sledges (pulks) loaded with the supplies required to complete the 3 race stages.
The event, organised by Venture Challenge, attracts around 25 teams per year and provides all teams with full Artic survival training. This includes the infamous ice break drill, where you are expected to ski into a hole cut in sea ice in just your thermals!
To be able to reach the North Pole and their fundraising target of £30,000 any help will be much appreciated. If you think you can assist Doug and Team Deep Freeze in this challenge, for example through messages of support or by personal or Corporate sponsorship, then please contact them through their website.
